Imura art gallery is pleased to announce its first solo exhibition by Shiro Tsujimura in ten years.

Shiro Tsujimura (b. 1947) is a world-leading Japanese ceramic artist. Highly acclaimed internationally, his bold, enthralling, and convention-defying works are in the collections of numerous art museums and other museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

Tsujimura resolved to become a ceramic artist in 1971 at the age of twenty-four when he became fascinated by an uncelebrated Oido chawan (tea bowl) at the Japan Folk Crafts Museum in Meguro City, Tokyo. He subsequently hand-built his home and pottery at a remote location deep in the mountains of Nara Prefecture. For the next fifty years, it became his base for creating his distinctive artwork. Besides ceramics, Tsujimura produces painting, calligraphy, and other forms of art. Spurred by something from within, he works with his hands fervently every day in order to give form to that something that he is striving for, trying over and over again until satisfied. Each of his works possesses a hidden, warm beauty behind the outward magnificence, and emits a strong and a distinctive presence.

From among Tsujimura’s wide range of artworks, this exhibition focuses particularly on paintings and pots. It is a good opportunity to see up close and fully appreciate these works full of life into which the proudly independent ceramic artist Shiro Tsujimura has poured so much effort.
